Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway
You’re already on it! The 52-mile drive from Cody to Yellowstone’s East Entrance follows the North Fork Highway through the stunning Wapiti Valley. Stop at historic lodges built by Buffalo Bill himself, watch for wildlife, and enjoy dramatic mountain vistas. This is one of the most beautiful drives in Wyoming.
Chief Joseph Scenic Byway
This 47-mile highway (Wyoming Highway 296) connects Cody with the Beartooth Highway, offering spectacular views of the Absaroka Mountains, Clarks Fork Valley, and Sunlight Basin. The byway is named after Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce, who traveled through this area in 1877.
Beartooth Highway
Called “the most beautiful drive in America” by the late Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway (U.S. Route 212) climbs to 10,947 feet above sea level. This 68-mile stretch between Red Lodge, Montana and Cooke City offers jaw-dropping alpine scenery, switchbacks, and panoramic views. Note: The highway typically opens late May to mid-October, weather dependent. Check current status.
Pro Tip: Make a loop! Drive the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway to connect with the Beartooth Highway, continue to Red Lodge, Montana for lunch, then return via another route. It’s a full day of unforgettable scenery.
